Boats and ferries in Portugal: times, fares and quays

Each crossing has its own page with the quay you board from, the departures in the current period and the ticket price in euros. Beside every table is the date we last held it up against the operator's own information.

Boat trips in Portugal come in several shapes. In Tavira, Silnido's small passenger boats shuttle from the town quay and from Quatro Águas to Tavira Island, on timetables that change with the season. In Porto, the little Douro crossings between the two banks now accept Andante tickets. Further offshore, boats to the Berlengas or between Flores and Corvo depend on the season and the sea.

Knowing what kind of boat you are taking saves surprises. A ferry may carry vehicles, depending on the line, while island boats, river boats and water taxis take foot passengers only, sometimes with bikes or pets on conditions. Each page states the vessel type, the quay and what you are allowed to bring.

A few trips need a booking or a separate permit, such as the one for the Berlengas nature reserve. If next season's sailings are not out yet, the page tells you that plainly rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Quays on the map

Markers show each quay, and a dashed line links the two ends of one crossing. Tapping a marker opens a short summary that leads on to the crossing itself.

Questions about boats and ferries in Portugal

Can I take a car on a Portuguese island boat?

Only where a vehicle ferry runs. The Ria Formosa island boats, the Douro crossings in Porto and the water taxis carry foot passengers only. The vessel type is printed at the top of every page.

How do I pay for the boat?

It varies: at a ticket booth on the quay, on board, on the operator's website or, in Porto, with an Andante ticket valid for the zone. Each page explains the system on that crossing and whether a return ticket exists.

Are there charges on top of the ticket?

For some destinations, yes. Landing on Berlenga requires an access permit issued by the ICNF, Portugal's nature conservation agency, paid separately from the boat. Where this applies, the crossing page sets out the permit rule as it stood on our check date.

Where do your times and prices come from?

Each figure is copied from the company or authority running the boat: its website, a timetable PDF, the fare list or a public notice. We save a dated copy and show that date next to each table. When two official sources disagree, the number is left out and the page explains why.

What if the weather turns?

Wind, swell or fog can lead operators to cancel or change a departure, and the operator's own channels announce it first. On the day, trust the operator's own notices over the tables here.

Is there a Portuguese version?

Yes. Every crossing has a Portuguese page too, written on its own for Portuguese readers but built on the same figures and check date.
